Turtle Conservation

Turtles are significant in Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal culture. Six of the world’s seven marine turtles breed or migrate through the Torres Strait.

We know that single plastic and other ocean litter causes significant harm to the world's marine turtle population.

Taronga Zoo's turtle conservation program provides:

  • Care and rehabilitation of sick or injured turtles
  • Research to identify important turtle habitats
  • Support for Indigenous Rangers who are monitoring and protecting Hawksbill and Green Turtles
  • Assess/predict the impact of climate change on turtle habitat.

The Bellingen River Turtle was almost wiped out by a virus. Taronga Zoo is breeding and releasing these cute little guys back into the wild. We are proud to support this program.
